‘Walkers’ paradise’ named one of this year’s best winter staycations

A beautiful area of Scotland is one of this year’s top trending winter staycation destinations, according to new data released by Airbnb. Fort Augustus, on the southern tip of Loch Ness, made the top three most popular destinations.

The historic village is the starting point for many tourists eager to catch a glimpse of the elusive Loch Ness monster. But it’s not all about Nessie.

Visit Scotland states: “Lying on the impressive 60 mile long Caledonian Canal, halfway between Inverness and Fort William, Fort Augustus offers spectacular views down Loch Ness and is a paradise for keen walkers and cyclists with many beautiful walks around the area, the most popular being the Great Glen Way.”

The Great Glen Way stretches from coast to coast across the Highlands, linking Fort William and Inverness.

The Suidhe Viewpoint is one of Tripadvisor’s best-rated attractions in Fort Augustus, offering incredible views of the landscape.

‘Mike O’ wrote on Tripadvisor: “The views from here are stunning. Lakes, mountains, glens. In fact, the stop is also known as the Great Glen Ways.”

‘Billysan’ said: “Drove this road on three occasions and the scenery changed every time. It’s a stunning viewpoint.”

While there are no confirmed sightings of the Loch Ness monster, the Loch is an incredible sight on its own.

Check out the Loch Ness Centre to find out more about research work on the loch or explore Urquhart Castle for gorgeous views from Grant Tower.

Visit the Clansmen Centre to learn more about the area’s historic clans and to see examples of 17th century weaponry.

If the weather’s grim, there’s gourmet dishes on offer at Station Road Restaurant or pints at the Lock Inn.
