San Francisco and Honolulu have some of the highest grocery store prices in the U.S.

That’s according to the U.S. Government Accountability Office, which found that the cost of grocery store goods has risen by about 2% per year on the national scale between 2013 and 2022. In that same period, with an average 3.1% increase per year, grocery store prices in San Francisco and Honolulu topped other metropolitan areas.

The report also found that grocery store prices in 2021 and 2022 were at the highest around the country since the 1980s, when inflation was at a record high. Between 2021 and 2022, they swelled an average of 11% at the national scale, according to the study.

San Francisco alone had about a 12% increase in grocery store prices from 2021 to 2022, while the Dallas-Fort Worth metropolitan area and Detroit had the highest increases, with an average spike of 14%.

GAO shared that finding the individual cause of rising food prices was difficult to pinpoint but listed a number of factors, including the pandemic, the war in Ukraine and food supply chain issues. Moreover, the distinction between prices can also depend on “the type of food purchased” and “where in the country the food is purchased.”

“Some of the variation among cities can be attributed to retailers passing on local cost increases in transportation and retail overhead expenses, such as labor and rent, to consumers, according to USDA.”
