‘Thought bubble’: Rishworth hits out at Dutton over JobSeeker proposal

Social Services Minister Amanda Rishworth has hit out at Peter Dutton’s “thought bubble” regarding the Opposition leader’s proposed changes to JobSeeker.

More than a million Australians will receive a boost to their welfare payments after Labor revealed in the budget that several income support payments will increase by $40 a fortnight.

Mr Dutton proposed increasing the threshold for how much a person on JobSeeker payments could earn each week, before it cuts into their welfare payment.

Ms Rishworth said she doesn’t think the Opposition leader has done any costings about the “fiscal implications” of his proposal.

“What we don’t know is how this will actually encourage workforce participation,” she told Sky News Australia.

“He has provided no evidence to suggest that this would alleviate barriers that many people on JobSeeker have in gaining employment.”
