This SF restaurant now has a chef who worked for Rene Redzepi

Though its Instagram page still says “closed for remodel” and Google still lists it as “temporarily closed,” one of San Francisco’s trendiest bistros has finally reopened.

Park Tavern, at 1652 Stockton St. in San Francisco’s North Beach neighborhood, has been closed for the past year and a half. But, according to owner Anna Weinberg Hospitality’s Instagram page, it reopened May 6 after an extensive remodel. The buzzy restaurant, which overlooks Washington Square Park, not only has a new look but also a new chef, according to the Tablehopper.

If there’s one word to describe the new Park Tavern, it might be “swanky.” A black marble floor immediately stands out, as well as a back bar with reverse parasol pendant lamps hanging from the ceiling, with 1930s Arts and Crafts-style stained glass. In front, there’s a French bistro vibe where a dark green, leather sectional wraps around seemingly half of the space and white table-clothed two-tops separate diners for a little privacy.

Food-wise, Weinberg has brought in a new executive chef — Marco Cerruti — who has worked at two-Michelin-star San Francisco restaurant Saison; the sister restaurant of world-acclaimed Noma, called 108, in Denmark; and a slew of others, such as the Charter Oak in St. Helena. The menu will stay “classic American,” so think steak tartare, deviled eggs, roasted chicken and even the return of the famous Park Tavern french fries.

Originally opened in 2011, Park Tavern was first set up for success by chef Jennifer Puccio. While she is no longer an active partner in the business, as she now focuses on Marlowe and Cavalier, the second iteration of Park Tavern is a long time coming. It was supposed to be ready for a 10-year anniversary in September of 2021, but was delayed for a multitude of reasons, including supply chain issues.

Newly reopened, now might be the best time to celebrate Park Tavern.
