This Loc-Bow Style Is Just as Pretty as It Sounds

Calling all of my loc’d up legends! You already know locs have a high capacity to hold a range of fun updos—but have you seen this fresh and v unique styling option yet? The “loc bow” look on today’s episode of The Braid Up is a half-up, half-down style that utilizes the rope twist method to create a breathtaking bow on top of your head. And what is a rope twist, the unfamiliar might ask? It’s just twisting two locs together to create a single tightly formed twist.

For an easy-to-follow tutorial, check out the flawless technique showed off by stylist & loc specialist Vernell Boatswain in today’s episode. And, for even more pointers on how you can wear this style at its best, keep reading!

1. Moisturize your scalp. Strong, healthy hair doesn’t happen on its own—it’s the result of caring for your roots and scalp on reg, especially if your hair is in a protective style. Massage in a moisturizing scalp oil every night to ensure your hair keeps thriving while locs are in.

    2. Keep your locs moisturized. You can moisturize your actual locs without having to worry about the grimy leftovers sticking around in your hair. Just choose a lightweight loc moisturizer that you can smooth over your locs to help keep your hair hydrated without all the residue.

    3. Make loc smithing a breeze. Use double-prong clips to help twist in loose hairs, per Vernell’s technique above. This will help hold down the rolled-in hair, in turn making the process a lot easier.

    4. Protect the bow while you sleep. Wrapping up your bow at night with a satin or silk scarf is necessary for keeping this intricate style intact. If you feel like the scarf might slip while you’re sleeping, place a velvet wig grip underneath to help it stick in place all night long.
