Teens trapped after diving off cliff

Two teenagers became trapped and were forced to take shelter in a cave after diving from a clifftop into dangerous surf waters.

At about 2.10pm on Friday, emergency services received calls that two teenage boys, 16 and 17, were stranded at the cliff bases at Mistral Point in Maroubra.

The pair had jumped off the cliff top and into the churning surf, but they were washed against the rocks.

Fortunately the teens were able to seek shelter inside a cave while their friends called for help.

Police rescue officers were called to the scene, along with Surf Life Saving NSW, Randwick Council Lifeguards and NSW Ambulance paramedics.

However, the teens were trapped in a difficult location to access.

Dramatic vision shows the large waves lashing rocks near the teens as officers from the Police Rescue and Bomb Disposal unit abseil down to the cave to retrieve the teens.

The teens were then winched back up the cliff face in a delicate operation.

The boys were treated by paramedics for minor cuts and abrasions at the scene, before being taken to the Prince of Wales Hospital as a precaution.

Eastern Beaches Police Area Command Duty Officer, Chief Inspector Tracy Ford, said the rescue was a great outcome as a result of the efforts of all agencies involved.

“While the area does attract adventure seekers, it must not be forgotten that the area is still extremely dangerous,” she said.

“Thankfully the Police Rescue and Bomb Disposal Unit are trained for such retrievals – and thanks to the quick response of all first responders, we were able to avoid a tragic outcome this long weekend.”
