Taylor Farms reopens foodservice facility in Monterey County after destructive 2022 fire
SALINAS – After a massive fire destroyed its Abbott Street facility in Salinas a year ago, Taylor Farms has announced it is ready to reopen its flagship location as a new state-of-the-art facility.
The Salinas-based company is a leading producer of salads and fresh foods in North America and will have its rebuilt foodservice facility running at full operation by the end of April the company announced.
“Thank you to every helping hand that made this rebuild process possible: thank you to our Taylor Farms team for their teamwork and flexibility during this time, the tremendous community and many city officials whose support we received, and the hardworking construction teams and engineers that worked tirelessly on this project,” said Bruce Taylor, chairman and CEO of Taylor Farms in a press release. “We are thrilled to be back in this facility and once again serve our customers from our flagship location.”
A four-alarm fire broke out at the Taylor Farms facility at 1225 Abbott St. on the night of April 13, 2022. More than 22 fire units from across Monterey County responded as well as an Environmental Protection Agency response team and other agencies such as the Monterey County Office of Emergency Services and the county Health Department mostly due to the presence of about 35,000 gallons worth of ammonia.
Because of the potential for an explosion which may have then released a harmful ammonia cloud, evacuation and shelter-in-place orders were issued for the surrounding area. Officials were also prepared to close a one-mile stretch of nearby Highway 101 if the situation had escalated.
By early the next afternoon, fire officials announced the blaze had been contained and all the hazardous materials on scene had been secured, prompting the lifting of the evacuation and shelter-in-place orders. But nearly all of the building had been destroyed and was considered a total loss. Maintenance work being done at the facility at the time was cited as the likely cause of the fire. No injuries were reported.
Last week, Taylor Farms announced the rebuilt facility’s reopening describing it as “a heartfelt moment for all Taylor Farms employees, community members and city officials that helped make this moment possible.”
The company said the “flagship location” is particularly meaningful to the family-owned company because it is where the business began in California nearly 30 years ago and is the foundation that provided the momentum for the rest of the country.
“I can speak for our entire Taylor Farms family and say we are all enthusiastic for the re-opening of this facility,” said Mark Borman, President of Taylor Farms Foodservice in the release. “Through a tragic event came the outpouring of support from our team, community, and customers. We are forever grateful.”
Taylor Farms has 22 production locations, 24,000 team members and produces and delivers fresh foods on a daily basis, said the company.
