Speaking Up and Speaking Out About Breast Cancer

When Punita K. went for her annual mammogram in 2016, she didn’t think too much about it—not even when they called her back for further testing. She assumed the doctor was just being careful and she appreciated the due diligence. But one Saturday morning she got a call that would change her life. She had breast cancer. Although she was a little bit in shock, Punita continued on with her day, which meant meeting up with friends for a morning walk.

A Tool to Help Breast Cancer Patients

Punita’s experience is unfortunately not uncommon. According to the CDC, approximately 264,000 women—and about 2,400 men—are diagnosed with breast cancer in the U.S. each year. That’s why advancements in research, diagnostics and treatments are so vital. And fortunately, there have been some notable strides that have helped enable personalized treatment for cancer, including the Oncotype DX Breast Recurrence Score® test. Backed by prospective clinical trials and outcome data in more than 100,000 patients, it is the only genomic test which provides personalized information about whether a woman with early-stage hormone receptor positive, HER2 negative breast cancer with up to three lymph nodes affected will or will not benefit from chemotherapy after surgery, as well as the risk of her cancer returning. And for Punita, it was key in helping her and her doctors to make an informed decision about her treatment plan.
