SF gay bar to reopen this spring after devastating 2019 fire
More than three years since a fire forced Q Bar to shutter in 2019, the Castro bar is set to finally reemerge this spring, reported the Bay Area Reporter. This will likely come as a welcome spot of joy for the neighborhood after the recent abrupt closure of Harvey’s, a nearby 27-year-old gay bar and restaurant.
The newly renovated business will have brand-new walls and bathrooms, Q Bar co-owner Cip Cipriano told the Bay Area Reporter. Before it closed, Q Bar was a popular LGBTQ nightlife destination, with events like the weekly party Booty Call, hosted by drag queen Juanita MORE! Q Bar did not respond to SFGATE’s request for comment in time for publication.
A four-alarm fire at 456 Castro St. on November 16, 2019, injured two people and displaced 13. It closed Osaka Sushi, clothing store Body and Q Bar. Firefighters never determined the cause of the fire, which resulted in catastrophic damage to Q Bar.
Now, though, Cipriano and co-owner John “JB” Bellemore are happily planning a reopening party with go-go dancers.
“For a lot of people, Q Bar was the place they called home — and soon, they can again,” Cipriano told the SF Standard.
The building at 456 Castro St.’s history as a gay bar dates back to 1971, when it was called Twilight. Its other previous incarnations include Dirty Dick’s, Le Bistro, Castro Station and Bar on Castro.
