Ed W. on YelpOakland’s popular Homeroom restaurant is expanding its reach in the East Bay.
The macaroni and cheese restaurant confirmed to SFGATE via email that it has a new store planned for Berkeley’s Gilman District at 1313 Ninth St. and anticipates opening sometime in April. Diablo Magazine first reported the forthcoming store.
Homeroom did not provide additional details, but it seems the project has been underway since 2022. Berkeley city planning records show that Homeroom was issued a permit to install business signs on the building last October.
The new restaurant is expected to settle into a warehouse space where businesses Funky Elephant and Philz Coffee already operate. Homeroom is taking up the former site of Farm Burger, which shuttered in 2018.
In 2011, Homeroom opened its first Oakland storefront at 400 40th St., and it quickly drew a crowd of impassioned macaroni and cheese fans. Homeroom has remained a hit ever since with its vast selection of creative dishes, including truffle mac, Buffalo chicken mac and its most popular item: Gilroy garlic mac.
The future restaurant will be Homeroom’s third Bay Area outpost behind its Oakland flagship store and Homeroom To Go, which is at 4007 Webster St. in Oakland.
