Panda Express is opening another East Bay location
A new Panda Express is possibly on its way to Oakland, according to WhatNowSF. This will be the fifth location of the fast-food chain in the city.
At this point, the process is in the very early stages. A pre-application was approved, by the city of Oakland, for a brand-new building to be built at 1435 High St. The new building will hold a drive-thru and pickup-only version of the fast-food Chinese restaurant.
The application was submitted by Ruben Rodela, an architect at Gary Wang & Associates, a firm based in Monterey Park. Rodela previously got the ball rolling on a Panda Express in Sonoma back in 2020.
Currently, the space at 1435 High St. is a parking lot, according to Google Maps. Neighboring businesses include two strip malls, one with a Cardenas Market, a Hispanic grocery chain, and the other with Pupusas Salvadorenas and Supermercado Mi Tierra. To the south, it appears to be very residential.
Panda Express was founded in 1983 by the Cherng family in Glendale. Famous for its crispy, tangy and sweet orange chicken, the company now has more than 2,000 locations across the country. There are nearly 600 locations in California alone, which makes up 27% of all stores for the company, according to ScrapeHero, a data website.
Both Rodela and Jessica Chao, a spokesperson for the Panda Restaurant Group, were unable to be reached by SFGATE in time for publication.
