“First ball, he bowled it down the leg-side. I was relieved. I told myself ‘Thank God, it was wide. I don’t have any business playing it’. I just kept seeing the ball carry to the wicketkeeper and left it alone. I was relieved that we got the run and the equation came down to 1 off 1. Thankfully, I told myself that no one would pelt stones at my house,” Ashwin said.

Ashwin came in when India needed two runs off as many balls. He watched the ball going down the leg side and left it, which led the umpire to signal for wide. Ashwin then cleared the infield for a single off the bowling of Mohammed Nawaz, leading to jubilation in the Indian dugout.

Meanwhile, India bowling coach Paras Mhambrey heaped praise on Ashwin for his awareness. When asked what conversation the management had before sending Ashwin, Mhambrey said: “It is other way around.”

“When it comes to Ashwin, it is him who tells us that this is what I am going to do. It is just the way he is. He showed his composure and the presence of mind to actually leave that ball. If you look at it, any other individual at that stage would just swing his bat but that is Ashwin for you,” Mhambrey said in the press conference.
