‘I’m obsessed’: Surprising reaction to mum letting daughter chop her hair off
When most parents find their children cutting their hair off, their first reaction is to panic, and then to remove the scissors out of the little hands immediately.
One mum took a different approach, and her way of handling it has been praised by thousands of parents online.
Valerie Farlow posted a clip to TikTok of her letting her daughter cut her own hair off, with little judgement.
The clip shows her daughter bent over a rubbish bin, hacking her hair off, without a mirror or much of a thought.
The calm mum asks, “you decided to cut it all on your own?” and she replies, “yeah”.
The mother tells her to “take a pause real quick” just to check if it’s the style that she wants.
The young girl is super impressed with her skills, and turns to the camera with a big smile.
Valerie captioned the video, “whoever needs to hear this, hair grows back”.

Internet praises mum
Most of the time, social media is a place where mothers are torn down and judged, but the reaction to this video was the opposite.
The clip went viral with 1.1 million likes and 22,400 comments, with the majority of commenters praising the mother for her gentle parenting, and the girl for her confidence.
“I’m just obsessed with how you talk to her, thank you for being so kind and gentle,” one wrote.
Another added, “whether she likes it or not in 10 years she’s only going to remember that mum supported her and encouraged her creativity and her individuality.”
A user commented, “It’s hair, it’s not fingers or toes, it’ll be back. Good job momma.”

After a question from a user asking, “how it turned out” Valeria shared a follow-up video with snaps of her daughter rocking her new pixie cut, which actually occurred a couple of years ago.
In a third video, the mum did admit she was panicking while watching her cut, because she was thinking of the family photos they had coming up as it was near Christmas.
She didn’t want to ruin her daughter’s confidence by overreacting but she was thinking, “please stop, please stop, don’t do it anymore”.
TikTok users who saw the pictures of the young girl’s new haircut were quick to comment on her big smile.
“It suits her so well, and you can feel the happiness radiating from her,” one person wrote.
A second person said, “I’m a big fan of your daughter’s confidence. She knew what she wanted, went for it, and she looks so cute. The world better watch out for her.”
Other people reminded users of the great parenting, “The mum allowed it and validated her! That was also very important”, and another said, “The lesson in body autonomy here is profound”.
