An old-school 1950s-style drive-in burger joint in Redding, California, was damaged by a fire on Tuesday, April 11, around 11 p.m. The damages to the building were estimated to be more than $100,000, according to KRCR.

Pop’s 50’s Place’s Americana finishings look straight out of a scene from the movie “Diner.” The single-story building has an overhanging roof held up by pillars where you drive up and park your car. The interior is simple — small tables and orange plastic booths. Sun-withered photographs line the walls, and a walk-up counter sits in the corner. Sticking to the theme, the Beach Boys play in the background, and the menu consists of unpretentious diner fare, such as burgers, hot dogs, pastrami sandwiches and hand-scooped milkshakes. The diner was established in 1994; before that, the location was home to an A&W drive-in.

In the recent blaze, the interior was damaged, but, reportedly, all was not lost.

Ryan Vollmer, project manager at Cronic Disaster Restoration & Construction, said the hope is to restore it as if the fire had never occurred.

“We want to find out exactly what his game plan is as far as putting this place back together,” Vollmer told KRCR. “The smoke smell, it makes it tough to go inside the walls and whatnot, so [we] just [have] to get together with the homeowner and see what his plans are.”

The restoration isn’t expected to be an easy task. Vollmer said that older buildings often have asbestos, lead-based paint and other problems that have to be addressed in order for the building to pass a new city inspection.

“We just try to do the best we can with the city, with the homeowner, with the insurance,” Vollmer said. “There’s a lot of hands in the cookie pot to make these buildings go back together.”

The cause of the fire is still unknown. SFGATE reached out to the Redding Fire Department but did not hear back in time for publication.
