Free food samples are back at this California-born grocery store
Grab a toothpick and taste this snack that returns after a long absence. Free samples at Trader Joe’s are back, according to Mashable.
After the pandemic put an obvious hold on free sample stations across many grocery stores in an effort to reduce the spread of the coronavirus, many around the country are starting to bring them back — but with a new approach.
“We want to focus a little more on new products,” a spokesperson for Trader Joe’s told SFGATE by email. “Things not necessarily on the shopping list but things we’re excited to share.”
Calls to the 4th Street and 9th Street locations in San Francisco confirmed that free samples have returned. Amethyst, an employee who oversees the 9th Street Trader Joe’s sample station, said she restarted the program the first weekend in October, and that samples returned to all San Francisco stores Oct. 2.
Apparently, the free samples will no longer be attached to a kitchen, though.
“It’s totally different,” Amethyst said. “We used to do coffee and hot food, but now it won’t be attached to a kitchen.”
Instead, the new Trader Joe’s model will follow a more standard approach to free samples commonly seen at other grocery stores, such as Costco. Customers can expect foods like cheeses and jams, which are easy to divvy up for taste testing.
Many items will be seasonally focused. Right now, most items will be pumpkin-related as Halloween approaches.
