By India Today Web Desk: Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp has confirmed that forward Diogo Jota will miss the upcoming FIFA World Cup after sustaining a serious calf injury. The Portuguese was stretchered off in the final moments of Liverpool’s 1-0 win over Manchester City at Anfield.

While speaking at a press conference, the German manager said that Jota would be out for a long time after picking up an injury against Manchester City.

“It will be for a long time. We talk about months, so we will see,” said Klopp, when asked about Jota’s injury.

The German continued to say that Jota knew the injury was serious and could impact his hopes of representing Portugal at the upcoming FIFA World Cup.

“He knew it when we carried him off the pitch. At that moment he already knew it was a serious one and it could be pretty impactful on his World Cup dreams,” Klopp added.

Klopp confirmed that the Portuguese had picked up a calf injury which is very sad news for his nation, ahead of the World Cup.

“It’s a pretty serious injury to the muscle, calf muscle. Now the recovery starts, or the process starts, let me say it like this. That’s it pretty much, that’s the first diagnosis, which was pretty clear. All the rest will follow in the next few days. Very sad news for the boy, for us, for Portugal, for everybody,” said Klopp.

Earlier, Klopp had said that if Jota stayed down and had to be stretchered off, then it must mean it’s a serious injury.

“If Diogo stays down it is not good,” said Klopp as Liverpool beat Manchester City on October 16.

Jota was expected to play an important role for Portugal in the upcoming World Cup. They are grouped with Uruguay, Ghana and South Korea.
