By India Today Web Desk: USA forward Christian Pulisic scored the game-winning goal against Iran, helping the Americans reach the last 16 of the FIFA World Cup 2022 in Qatar. Pulisic was injured in the process and was taken to the hospital as a “precaution,” though his participation in the knockout game against the Netherlands is unknown.

Pulisic was hurt after tapping in Sergino Dest’s header in the 38th minute as the USA forward collided with Iran goalkeeper Alireza Beiranvand. Pulisic was on the ground for several minutes and struggled to return to the game.

Brenden Aaronson replaced Pulisic at halftime. Pulisic has 22 goals in 55 international appearances. The US made the goal stand in the second half, holding off Iran’s charges down the stretch, including nine minutes of stoppage time.

According to later reports, the 24-year-old was taken to the hospital for scans of an abdominal injury. Despite initial concerns about his participation in Saturday’s game against the Dutch, Pulisic has stated that he will play. Pulisic said that he was confident that he would be ready for the United States World Cup last-16 match against the Netherlands.

“We worked so hard as a group to be in this position,” Lille forward Weah said.

“Thanks to Christian. We love him and we thank him. It’s a great feeling.

Juventus midfielder McKennie added: “Obviously we’re very thankful (Pulisic) threw his body there.

“But we have 25 guys other than Christian who would do the same thing.

“Everybody is ready to give everything. It’s unfortunate he had to come out but the fact he’s throwing his body on the line tells you how close this team is.”
