EWS reservation: DMK to explore legal options after setback
Hours after the Supreme Court’s split verdict upheld EWS reservations, Tamil Nadu chief minister MK Stalin said he would consult legal experts to chalk out the next course of action, calling the decision a setback to the century-old fight for social justice.
The DMK government in Tamil Nadu was one of the parties in the case and had decided not to provide EWS quota for government jobs. It was also a petitioner against the EWS quota in SC. DMK’s ally, Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi founder Thol Thirumavalavan said the party will file a review petition in court against the decision.
Stalin said the verdict was a setback for “our century-long crusade for social justice”. He called upon political parties and like-minded organisations from Tamil Nadu who had played an important role in getting the first amendment to the Constitution for reservation, to come together to ensure social justice.
Senior advocate from the DMK P Wilson argued that the intent of reservation was to work towards social justice and not economic justice. “Reservation was meant to address historical discrimination because of which many deprived and marginalised sections of society were kept away from public administration and education. Poverty as an exclusive test cannot be the basis of reservation,” he said, adding that exclusion goes against the principle of equality.
