Critically acclaimed Bay Area bagel shop to open another location

Berkeley’s massively popular Boichik Bagels, which the New York Times’ Tejal Rao once called “some of the finest New York-style bagels I’ve ever tasted,” is once again expanding. After opening a second bagel shop in Palo Alto this fall, owner Emily Winston is now expanding further in the South Bay with an upcoming Santa Clara location.

“The plant I’m building is getting close to being done, and we should be getting that going in a month or two,” Winston told SFGATE. “So that’s going to let us support more stores.”

Winston announced her plans to build a wholesale plant in Berkeley’s Gilman District last summer. The plant will produce raw dough for each retail store as well as bake bagels for wholesale. Once it opens in the next month or two, Boichik lovers can expect even more bagel shops to open in the Bay Area.

“I’m definitely not done signing retail leases yet,” Winston said. “Ideally, I want to get to where everywhere in the Bay, within 20 minutes or so, you’d be able to get to a Boichik.”

For now, though, she’s excited about the new Santa Clara restaurant at 2050 Wyatt Drive, which she expects to open this summer. She chose the location both for its large outdoor patio space and its proximity to offices like Intel.

“We’re building this to be able to handle really huge catering orders,” she said. “So that if Google wants to order 10,000 bagels every Tuesday morning, we will make that happen out of this spot … I feel like if you need to bribe people to get back in the office, if you tell them there’s going to be Boichik Bagels there, you’re going to get them to show up in the office.”

The Santa Clara location will be a full retail space with the same menu as the other Boichik shops. While the Berkeley plant will make all the bagel dough, bagels will still be boiled and baked fresh at the bagel shop itself.

“I always want it to be baked on site because to me, if it’s not baking the bagels right there, that’s not a proper bagel shop,” Winston said.

While many Boichik fans rejoiced at the news of the upcoming Santa Clara location, others clamored for even more expansion.

“I know I have a lot of fans in San Jose, so a lot of people are very excited to have a location closer to them,” Winston said. “What’s funny is on Instagram, I put out news and everyone’s like, hey, we want a location over here, too! Everyone wants one conveniently close to their house. So I think it’s a good sign.”

Luckily for bagel lovers across the Bay Area, their dreams may just come true in the next year.

“If people spot a location they think would be great for a Boichik basically anywhere in the Bay, they can feel free to let me know,” Winston said. “… This is going to be a big year for us.”
