According to Christy Denney, the food blogger behind The Girl Who Ate Everything, this copycat Ruth’s Chris Sweet Potato Casserole is creamy and topped with a brown sugar pecan crust, just like the one at Ruth’s Chris Steakhouse. “One of our family favorites and a must-have side at Thanksgiving, these sweet potatoes will turn even non-sweet potato lovers into avid fans,” she says.

How to Make Ruth’s Chris Sweet Potato Casserole
“These are so good and are the only way to go as far as sweet potatoes go,” says Denney. “They’re creamy with a brown sugar pecan crust and could easily be dessert.”
As for cooking your sweet potatoes, Denney suggests just boiling, baking, or even microwaving your sweet potatoes, then cream them together with some eggs, sugar and butter.
Top with a brown sugar pecan crust and you have a Ruth’s Chris favorite in 45 minutes.
Can Sweet Potato Casserole be Made Ahead of Time?
Yes! Prepare the filling and bake, then refrigerate until the day of baking. Bake for 10-20 minutes then sprinkle the topping on top and bake according to the directions. I’ve also made the entire recipe days ahead and it reheats great!
Best Tips
A few more tips on perfecting the famous Ruth’s Chris casserole at home, courtesy of their Executive Corporate Chef, Abdiel Aleman:
- Pick the perfect sweet potatoes. “We prefer the Beauregard variety,” shares Aleman. “They have a rich and orange inside with a red to light orange skin. They’re also very sweet which is perfect for the final dish.”
- Add the sugar to the steamed sweet potatoes while they are hot. “This helps to dilute the sugar and prevents the sweet potatoes from having any grainy particles,” explains Aleman. “It also prevents having to overwhip the mix. Over-whipping makes the mix runny.”
- “Mix the melted butter, vanilla and eggs separately before adding to the sweet potato mix and bake until some of the edges start to get color and the center slightly jiggles before adding the crust,” he adds.
How Many Sweet Potatoes Do I Need to Feed 20 People?
According to Aleman, you need around 2-3 pounds to make a casserole that can feed 15-20 people.
What to Serve With Sweet Potato Casserole
This is a dish that is versatile. At Ruth’s Chris, they like to serve it alongside steak, but Aleman also points out it’s an awesome dessert with a scoop of vanilla bean ice cream on top!
