Trader Joe’s employees voted 73 to 53 in favor of unionizing Thursday after filing a petition with the National Labor Relations Board last month. The Thursday vote made the Bay Area storefront the first Trader Joe’s in California to unionize.
Crew members were seen celebrating after the vote in a video shared on Twitter by @renepakmorrison. Trader Joe’s United also celebrated with an Instagram post that simply read, “We won!”
Last week, SFGATE reported that the two employees at the Rockridge Trader Joe’s location had filed two unfair labor practice charges against the grocery chain, alleging union busting. In their complaint filings, crew members stated that the chain had violated Section 7 of the National Labor Relations Act by threatening to “retaliate against employees if they joined or supported a union.”
In March, the Los Angeles Times reported that staff at the Oakland Trader Joe’s fought to unionize in part due to a rat infestation that took two years to abate. The Oakland store on College Avenue now joins the ranks of three other unionized Trader Joe’s stores in Hadley, Massachusetts, Minneapolis and Louisville, Kentucky.
