Bay Area tech, biotech layoffs widen, jolt tech office janitors
Tech and life sciences companies have widened their job cuts in the Bay Area, with more than 100 layoffs adding to the woes for the wobbly sectors, official government filings show.
Separately, a company that provides janitorial services at tech offices has decided to chop jobs amid ongoing tech layoffs and tech-spurred cutbacks in space requirements.
The most recent tech or life science layoffs involve Medtronic, Jabil, Stratasys and Viasat, which together have revealed plans to eliminate 143 jobs in the Bay Area, according to WARN notices the companies sent to the state Employment Development Department.
Here are the details of the tech and life science cutbacks reported recently to the EDD:
- Medtronic, 59 job cuts in Sunnyvale. The maker of medical devices such as insulin pumps and miniature pacemakers, along with drug therapies, is permanently closing its Sunnyvale facility. The cutbacks are slated to occur July 1.
- Jabil, 57 layoffs in Fremont. The tech and electronics manufacturer is eliminating jobs as of May 30.
- Stratasys, 23 staffing cutbacks as part of a shutdown of its San Francisco office. The company makes 3D printers, software, and materials for advanced manufacturing. In 2020, Stratasys was bought by another 3D printer firm, Origin. June 1 is the expected layoff date.
- Viasat, an Internet service provider, is cutting four jobs in downtown San Jose. Thes cutbacks are due to occur on June 2.
Since mid-2022, tech companies have revealed plans to eliminate at least 20,100 jobs in the Bay Area, this news organization’s review of the EDD WARN notices shows.
Over the same time period, biotech and life sciences firms have disclosed their intention to chop at least 3,900 jobs in the Bay Area, according to the information in the various WARN notices.
The cutbacks in the tech sector are also causing layoffs for non-tech companies.
Flagship Facility Services has decided to eliminate 51 jobs, all at offices of Facebook app owner Meta Platforms. Of these, 42 jobs are due to be lost at Meta offices in Menlo Park and nine are being lost at a Meta Sunnyvale site. The cutbacks are due to occur May 30.
“The employees are represented by Unite Here! Local 19 and have bumping rights as may be provided by their collective bargaining agreement,” Michele Babb, vice president of legal with Flagship Facility Services, wrote in the company’s WARN letter to the EDD.
