Bay Area duo behind world best pizza to open tapas place

Gianni Chiloiro and Angelo Sannino of Doppio Zero are gearing up to open their newest Bay Area restaurant, Vida, a Spanish restaurant focused on small bites and a cocktails. The forthcoming restaurant, a stone’s throw from the Doppio Zero flagship, is slated to open in Mountain View at 110 Castro St. by January, Chiloiro told SFGATE.

“We always wanted to do a tapas restaurant with an emphasis on cocktails,” Chiloiro said. “It will be a place to go where somebody can have a couple of little dishes and a cocktail and then leave or stay for a full meal. We’ll have a couple of main courses, too.”

Vida is expected to offer a menu filled with more than 20 tapas, which include potato ham croquetas, grilled octopus and imported jamón ibérico, among others. The menu also includes a selection of three paellas along with three main courses that feature a 32-ounce grilled tomahawk ribeye steak.

The upcoming Spanish restaurant will be a mix of Spanish traditional food but also takes inspiration from Mediterranean and California flavors. Chiloiro’s goal for Vida is to create a restaurant with stellar dishes at moderate prices.

Chiloiro said he is most excited about having the opportunity to open a business that has a lively atmosphere and is fit for forming connections. He and Sannino tapped the shoulder of local architect Oswaldo Mesia, who converted the former space of Vietnamese restaurant Xanh into three sections: the main dining room, a private room and bar.

Another goal for Vida is that it gains the essence of a lounge as guests take their seats around a U-shaped bar and enjoy music played by a live DJ. The outside space is currently in the process of becoming a garden that will be used for additional seating.

Chiloiro is still riding the high after Michelin Guide-recognized Doppio Zero ranked among the top 100 pizzerias in the world and also claimed a spot among the top 50 pizzerias in the U.S. at No. 15. After the recognition, Chiloiro said that he gained new customers who were curious to take a bite from the fluffy, traditional Neapolitan-style pizzas. Doppio Zero is expected to open another storefront in Campbell, but the opening timeline is still unclear.
