Powerhouse Japanese ramen chain to open 5th Bay Area outpost

Japanese ramen restaurant Mensho is opening a fifth Bay Area location later this spring. The restaurant is known for tori paitan, a ramen with duck meat rolled in the typical chashu fashion.
Alicia L./YelpAward-winning Japanese ramen restaurant Mensho is expanding to Oakland. An official grand opening is yet to be announced, but The San Francisco Standard reports the restaurant will open in late spring.
Mensho was founded in 2005 by ramen master Tomoharu Shono. The Japanese chain has more than a dozen stores worldwide, all specializing in what the brand calls “farm-to-bowl ramen,” which means it features seasonal ingredients and uses specialty wheat to create its own noodles. The first Mensho in the Bay Area opened in 2016, at 672 Geary St. in San Francisco’s Tenderloin area. The brand opened a more casual takeout spot inside the Twitter building, called Jikasei Mensho, as well as a San Rafael shop, in late 2021. Another location opened in Union City in 2022.
Now, a fifth Bay Area outpost is headed to 4258 Piedmont Ave. in Oakland.
Mensho SF has been Michelin-rated since it opened. The chain has also been named a top spot for ramen by multiple Japanese media outlets.
At Mensho SF, diners typically seek creative versions of ramen that might not be featured elsewhere, such as spicy lamb miso ramen, green-colored matcha ramen, and tori paitan, with duck chashu. The rolled-up log of duck meat, which is then thinly sliced, is usually reserved for pork belly, making this version unique. It is unclear if the Oakland menu will match what’s served in San Francisco.
Mensho Oakland will replace Little Shin Shin, a 40-year-old Chinese restaurant that closed last spring. The family-run restaurant racked up three “Best of Oakland” awards in 2006, 2010 and 2012.
