Subaru’s new SUV confirmed for Oz

It isn’t an all-new vehicle, though, instead it’s the updated version of the current XV high-riding wagon. Refreshed versions will now wear the Crosstrek nameplate instead of XV.

Subaru Australia’s Managing Director, Blair Read, explained the name change.

“The new name embodies what the Crosstrek does and is, an all-wheel drive crossover small SUV that’s capable of trekking almost anywhere you please, whether that’s urban driving or outdoor adventures, with absolute confidence and enjoyment,” says Reid.

The new version will remain powered by Subaru’s 2.0-litre four-cylinder “Boxer” engine that makes 115kW and 196Nm in the current model and is matched to a CVT automatic transmission and all-wheel drive.

Subaru confirmed the hybrid version will also return.

Hybrid units are likely to maintain the four-cylinder engine combined with the 66kW electric motor and small capacity lithium-ion battery of the current XV Hybrid.

The hybrid in the current XV drinks a claimed 6.5L/100km.

This is only 0.5L/100km better than the fuel use of the petrol-only version, putting it a long way off the fuel efficiency of hybrid Toyotas.

Subaru claims the new Crosstrek has been upgraded to have a quieter and more comfortable ride.

Interior tech has been boosted with an 11.6-inch tablet-style central touchscreen that is compatible with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto and a wireless device charging pad.

The Japanese brand says it has worked with medical schools to study the structure and movement of the human body to design a more ergonomically comfortable vehicle.

Subaru will continue its reputation for top-notch safety with a range of driver aids and nine airbags covering both rows.
