A woman who was given up for adoption four decades ago has been reunited with her mother thanks to a post on Facebook.
Helen Mansfield, who lives in Perth, was given up by her unmarried mother at 10 days old, and adopted by a Welsh couple.
She married an Australian man before the couple moved to Western Australia, 7News reported.
But, seven years ago she put up a post on Facebook in a bid to find her mother and hours later someone revealed Helen’s mother was in the UK.
“Straight away, we knew each other. [Mum] gave me a big hug and said, ‘I feel I just won the lottery’,” Helen said.
She urged others who are in the position she was to bite the bullet and reach out to their birth family, adding it had been a life changing experience.
Helen’s actions also brought love in an unlikely place – between her adoptive father Gwyn and birth mother Glen.
Helen introduced the pair and the duo formed a quick bond, doing things like beach days together.
Then the pair shared a kiss.
“I went in to Helen and I said, ‘I’ve got something to say’. I said ‘Your dad kissed me’,” Glen said.
Helen said while she didn’t push for it or expect it, deep down she was hoping the pair would spark a connection
Gwyn and Glen had a commitment ceremony in Australia and officially tied the knot in the UK, with Helen being their celebrant.
The duo will fly to Australia later this year to celebrant Gwyn’s 80th birthday and meet their great grandchild.
