By India Today Web Desk: Shakib Al Hasan was a tad surprised after one of the journalists in the post-match press conference asked if Bangladesh happily accepted the revised target given to them in the T20 World Cup 2022 Super 12 match against India at Adelaide Oval.
After being asked to chase down 185, the Tigers started in a brisk way courtesy of a 21-ball half-century from Liton Das. However, rain interrupted proceedings and the Tigers were set a revised target of 151 to chase down from 16 overs.
During the rain interruption, Bangladesh were well above the DLS par score, but they faltered big time after play resumed.
“Bad luck Shakib, did you not try and play after the rain? What was the discussion that was going through?” the journalist asked initially.
“Did we have any option?” Shakib replied.
“No option, but did you try and convince them?””the journalist continued.
“Convince whom?” Shakib replied.
“Umpires and, of course, Rohit Sharma,” the journalist said.
“Do I have the ability to convince the umpires?” Shakib said.
“Accha. Then you were discussing the rivers of Bangladesh? What were you talking to the umpires?” the journalist asked.
“Now you are asking the right questions. Umpires called us and told us about the revised target, the playing rules, the number of overs we would play,” Shakib said.
“And you all accepted it?” the journalist asked.
“Yes (in a surprised tone),” Shakib added.
“Beautiful, thank you,” the journalist signed off.
Shakib also reckoned that Bangladesh should have achieved the target after Liton Das took them off to a flying start at the Adelaide Oval.
“Rain isn’t in our hands, so we had to play after accepting it. We needed around 84 runs in the last nine overs, and in such conditions, most teams would get the target. Unfortunately, we were very close, but not close enough,” Shakib stated.
Bangladesh, led by Shakib, are currently on four points from as many matches and are still in with a chance to qualify for the playoffs. Their last Super 12 match is against Babar Azam’s Pakistan.
