Walnut Creek: Student injured in stabbing at Northgate High School; suspect arrested

A student stabbed another student at Northgate High School in Walnut Creek, according to a Mount Diablo Unified School District statement Tuesday afternoon.

“Early this afternoon, there was a stabbing in Northgate High School. One student is in police custody and the victim has been taken to a local hospital,” the statement by district superintendent Adam Clark read in part. “Both students involved were in the 9th grade and were acquaintances.”

The district said Walnut Creek police were at the scene, and no other students were involved.

Students have returned to class. Counselors are on site and will remain on site Wednesday.

In a social-media post, police said dispatchers received a call form the school around 1 p.m. seeking medical aid after a student-on-student assault.

“WCPD officers and detectives are on scene conducting an investigation and have determined this was an isolated incident and there is no further threat to students or staff,” that post read in part. Police said the suspect was in custody, but shared no other information, citing an active investigation.

Although violent episodes in schools often feature guns, other weapons have often led to painful incidents such as last month’s fatal stabbing of a junior by a freshman during a fight at a Santa Rosa high school.

Anyone with information may call Walnut Creek police at (925) 935-6400 or the department’s anonymous tip line at (925) 943-5865.
