“The Winchesters” showrunner Robbie Thompson made that bold statement during a recent interview with Entertainment Weekly. And Thompson made it in response to a query about the arrival of new characters Betty (Andrea Londo) and Kyle (Ryan McCartan) in the series’ recently aired third episode. Though Mary Campbell (Meg Donnelly) and John Winchester (Drake Rodger) spend much of the episode having a heartfelt conversation via radio, it’s revealed throughout they’ve each got past or current romantic entanglements with the new arrivals.
According to Thompson, exploring Mary’s and John’s lives outside of slaying monsters was always going to be a big part of the show’s focus. “When we first talked about the show, we asked, ‘What are the things that we can do to mess with expectations and also just play the history of what these kids’ lives were,'” the showrunner told EW. Thompson went on to say Betty and Kyle will likely continue to be a source of conflict in Mary’s and John’s fledgling romance. “We like to complicate things for our characters, and there will definitely be some more complications,” Thompson offered after confirming, “You will definitely see more of Kyle, and you’ll definitely see more of Betty in future episodes.”
Things were never going to be easy for Mary and John, of course. They are, after all, destined to spend their lives hunting and killing otherworldly beasts. But even as “Supernatural” fans already know how their romance ends, it’s still proving loads of fun to watch how it all began.
