If Shaakuntalam takes us back to the epic love saga, spy stories continue to intrigue as Radhika Apte-starrer Mrs. Undercover drops on ZEE5. Couple it with a twisted love story or a heroic pilot saving the day, here’s all that shows up on screens this week!

Directed by National Award winner Gunasekhar, Shaakuntalam is a Telugu 3D mythological drama. The massively mounted film based on Kalidasa’s Sanskrit play Abhijnana Shakuntalam is due to release in Hindi, Telugu, Tamil, Malayalam and Kannada. Samantha Ruth Prabhu plays the titular role and Dev Mohan steps into King Dushyant’s shoes. This fourth century tale of love is set in Kashmir for its silver screen outing. The film also has an accomplished star cast that includes Mohan Babu, Prakash Raj and Gautami, Allu Arjun’s daughter Allu Arha is also portraying the role of Prince Bharata.

Renfield on April 14

Chris McKay-directed (English) Renfield is a modern monster tale of Dracula’s loyal servant. Touted as a spine-chilling experience with a pinch of comedy and fantasy, Nicholas Hoult stars as Renfield, the tortured aide to history’s most narcissistic boss Dracula. After centuries of servitude, Renfield is ready to see if there’s a life outside the shadow of The Prince of Darkness. Will he be able to move out of his master’s shadows or not? The film is based on an original idea by The Walking Dead and Invincible creator Robert Kirkman. It also stars Nicolas Cage, Awkwafina, Ben Schwartz and Adrian Martinez in pivotal roles.

Sword Art Online Progressive: Scherzo of Deep Night on April 14

Director Ayako Kono’s animated film features Yoshitsugu Matsuoka, Karuka Tomatsu and Inori Minase. It is a science fiction action adventure, reportedly based on the Sword Art Online: Progressive Light novels written by Reki Kawahara and a sequel to Sword Art Online Progressive: Aria of a Starless Night. It is in Japanese with English subtitles.

Mrs Undercover (ZEE5) on April 14

Starring Radhika Apte in and as Mrs Undercover, the film has Sumeet Vyas, Rajesh Sharma and Saheb Chatterjee in pivotal roles. A spy comedy, directed and written by debutant director Anushree Mehta and produced by B4U Motion Pictures in association with Jaadugar Films and Knight Sky Movies, the film trails the life of an undercover spy.

Plane (Lionsgate Play) on April 14

After enjoying success at the box office, Plane, starring Gerard Butler, is set to make its digital premiere exclusively on Lionsgate Play in India. This dark action thriller follows the nerve-wracking journey of a pilot, who lands up in a sticky situation and must seek the assistance of a criminal in order to protect their fellow hostage survivors from local pirates.

Obsession (Netflix) on April 13

Charlie Murphy, Richard Armitage and Indira Varma star in Glenn Leyburn Lisa Barros D’Sa directorial Obsession. Based on the novel, Damage, by Josephine Hart, it’s written by Morgan Lloyd Malcolm and Benji Walters. The story follows surgeon William (Richard Armitage) and his scandalous love affair with his son’s fianceacute;e Anna (Charlie Murphy).

American Manhunt: The Boston Marathon Bombing (Netflix) on April 12

A crime documentary by Floyd Russ brings together archive footage, chilling re-enactments and exclusive interviews shed new light on a tragedy and two brothers that suspended Boston in terror. After almost 10 years to the day of the attack, it captures the terrorist attack carried about by brothers, Dzhokhar Tsarnaev and Tamerlan Tsarnaev, during the annual Boston Marathon on April 15, 2013.

The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel Season 5 (Prime Video) on April 14

The period comedy drama series, created by Amy Sherman-Palladino, enjoys its fifth outing. The principal cast is anticipated to return for the series’ final season. The premiere will see three-episode on April 13, and then air fresh episodes every week. Vikramaditya Motwane’s Jubilee’s Part 2 also streams on the same platform, same date.

Pankaj Batra-directorial and Gippy Grewal-starrer Punjabi film Mitran Da Naa Chalda drops on Zee5. Malayalam romantic comedy Pranaya Vilasam directed by Nikhil Muraly that won positive feedback makes its digital debut on the same platform.
