A “tired” US teacher who put her sudden fatigue down to her new job was left shocked when she was rushed to hospital with kidney and liver failure – and discovered her symptoms were being caused by an unknown pregnancy.
Peyton Stover, 23, from Nebraska, said she “thought it was normal to be tired all the time” while in her first year of teaching.
However when her legs started to swell, she went to see a doctor and discovered she was expecting a baby with boyfriend Travis Koesters.
The doctors performed two pregnancy tests, telling Peyton she was “definitely positive”, but the woman was still in disbelief, she told local news outlet KETV.
It was only after doctors performed an ultrasound and they pointed to her baby she was able to accept the news.
“She looked right at the screen and said, ‘You’re definitely pregnant,’” the young teacher said in an interview from her hospital bed.
However, there was another surprise to come, with medics revealing they needed to deliver the baby immediately as her health was at risk.
“My kidneys weren’t performing up to where they should and my liver wasn’t working properly. They said, ‘You’re having a baby in 15 minutes,’” she said.
She also had severe high blood pressure which Peyton said was “very scary”.
Her son Kash was delivered via emergency C-section and was born weighing 1.81kg. He was 10 weeks premature.
It was later confirmed Peyton had suffered from pre-eclampsia, which can lead to high blood pressure during pregnancy.
She said: “If I [hadn’t come in] when I did, I probably wouldn’t have made it through the weekend.”
The couple said they had wanted kids one day, but are over the moon that day came sooner than planned.
“Now that I’ve actually held him, fed him and things like that, it’s real. He’s actually mine,” Travis said.
