Taco Bell brings back crispy melt taco for a limited time

A Taco Bell fan-favorite item is returning to menus soon — but with a new name.

The cantina crispy melt taco, which features a fried, white corn tortilla shell, a smidge of velvety nacho cheese, seasoned ground beef and the accoutrements of iceberg lettuce strands, sour cream, chopped tomatoes and three kinds of cheese, first debuted in 2021. Now the same item is returning under a slightly different name — the crispy melt taco, according to The Takeout.

That’s right, Taco Bell only removed the word “cantina” from the moniker, perhaps so that folks won’t be confused when they see it on the menu. But it is the exact same meal.

The debut of the cantina crispy melt taco only lasted a few months in the fall of 2021. First spotted on menus in October, the item was silently removed by winter 2022.

It received acclaim from Taco Bell stans across Reddit two years ago for its nostalgia-inducing texture. The key is the fried white corn tortilla that holds it all together.

“The Cantina taco truly is the reason I’ve been going back to [Taco Bell],” wrote one Reddit commenter. “This was the closest I’ve had since the old days.”

Dennis Lee, the taste tester at The Takeout, also praised the white corn shell, calling it “crisp, light, and almost flaky.”

“Even though each bite shatters in your mouth,” Lee continued, “the shell has enough integrity to remain intact as you eat it, meaning the whole thing won’t crumble apart like Taco Bell’s classic shells do.”

The bad news is that this item will only be on menus until early March, Lee confirmed with a Taco Bell spokesperson.

For now, the crispy melt taco is available nationwide.
