By India Today Web Desk: Glenn Maxwell has reacted with a single-word tweet after Australia crashed out of the T20 World Cup following England’s win over Sri Lanka on Saturday.

The defending champions needed a favour from the Island nation, who were already eliminated, in order to qualify for the semi-finals of the tournament.

Following Australia’s narrow win over Afghanistan, Maxwell said that the team was hoping for a Sri Lankan win on Saturday.

“We have put ourselves into this situation, and now we have to sit and watch the next game. We have nothing more than hoping a Sri Lankan win tomorrow and hope that they do the job for us,” said Maxwell.

The Sri Lankan openers got off to a flying start against England with Pathum Nissanka being severe on the bowlers as he scored a 45-ball 67. However, the rest of the Sri Lankan bowlers found it tough as the English bowlers were able to restrict them to 141 runs in the allotted 20 overs.

Chasing 142 to win, Alex Hales and skipper Jos Buttler put the team in a strong position with a 75-run partnership for the first wicket. But once the openers were dismissed, the England batting line-up had a mini collapse and Harry Brook, Liam Livingstone and Moeen Ali failed to impress.

Ben Stokes was the lone warrior for the team and he played a calm and composed knock under pressure to ensure that the team got over the finish line in the end. Stokes’ innings of 44 came in 36 deliveries and only had two boundaries.

The winning runs came off Chris Woakes’ bat as England got over the finish line with four wickets and two balls to spare.

This meant that Australia was unable to defend its crown and Maxwell responded to it with a one-word tweet.

“Bugger…” tweeted Maxwell after Saturday’s result.

England joined New Zealand in the final four and will be looking on Sunday’s fixtures to see who they will be facing at Adelaide next.
