Streaming giant hikes subscription cost by more than 40 per cent

Retail giant Amazon has revealed it will increase its Amazon Prime subscription fee by about 40 per cent for its Australian members.

The company said members who are currently paying $6.99 per month, will be charged $9.99 from June 28 — an increase of about 43 per cent.

Meanwhile, the annual membership fee of $59 will increase to $79, an email to members stated.

Amazon Prime launched in Australia in 2018, giving its subscribers a range of shopping and entertainment benefits.

Prime members can stream television shows and movies online. They’re also offered free, one-day delivery across eligible products.

The subscription price had not changed since 2018, a company spokesperson said.

Head of Amazon Prime Australia, Marcos Regalo said the price reflected the growing number of services available through the retailer.

“Since launching in 2018, we’ve added more product selection available with fast, free, Prime delivery; launched Prime exclusive deals and discounts; and added more high-quality digital entertainment, including TV, movies, music, and books,” he said.

Amazon Prime remains among the cheapest of international streaming services.

A similar package with no advertisements on Netflix costs $22.99 per month, $13.99 on Disney Plus and starts at $10 on Stan.

While some services have released cheaper packages for subscribers, these packages may include advertisements or omit certain features like the option to download shows and watch them offline.
