St. Patrick’s Day: 4 Irish food finds (corned beef and cabbage on a stick?) plus a freebie

It doesn’t have to be the same old, same old this St. Patrick’s Day. Check out these creative offerings:

DOG HAUS: You would think corned beef and cabbage on a stick would be a messy proposition. Not at Dog Haus, that purveyor of gourmet sausages. That company’s würstmacher, Adam Gertler, has created an untraditional version of the traditional St. Patrick’s Day meal — an all-beef, hormone-free sausage blended with cabbage, garlic and corned beef spices. Customers can order the sausage as a corn dog; or grilled, sliced and served with dipping sauce; or in a breakfast burrito with eggs and tater tots; or the “Wurst Way,” topped with grilled sauerkraut, cheese and secret sauce and served on a large King’s Hawaiian bun.

Details: Available through March 31 at the Fremont (43456 Boscell Road) and Belmont (1000 El Camino Real) locations. With each purchase, Dog Haus will donate $1 to No Kid Hungry.

CELTIC TEA SHOPPE: Kristen and Dean Scott, the San Jose bakers of all things Celtic, are making something new this year: vegan shepherd’s pie. The topping is made with red potatoes and dairy-free ingredients, and the filling combines green lentils, carrots, crimini mushrooms, shallots, fresh rosemary, thyme and other herbs and spices. Other seasonal specials available for pickup are Irish whiskey fudge and Irish soda bread in three flavors (traditional currant and caraway, cranberry orange and a savory brown bread).

Details: Open noon to 6 p.m. Tuesday-Friday for pickups at 4432 Pearl Ave., San Jose; order shipments at https://celticteashoppe.com.

SEE’S CANDIES: If you’re a See’s devotee, you know all about their large St. Patrick’s Day Potato, a fluffy divinity confection dipped in chocolate, rolled in cocoa-cinnamon and studded with a couple of pine nuts to create the eyes of the potato. New this year is the Irish Cream, a dark chocolate shell filled with a chocolate cream tinged with roasted coffee and vanilla. It’s like Irish cream liqueur minus the alcohol. Available for a limited time.

Details: Find Bay Area locations and hours at www.sees.com.

TONY & ALBA’S PIZZA: Everyone’s a little Irish this month, even Italian businesses. At this venerable pizza and pasta restaurant, owners Al and Diana Vallorz are honoring St. Patrick’s Day with the P3 Pizza, topped with pesto, pancetta — and potatoes, of course. This pizza will be offered until April 1, when a pickle-and-mustard pizza with sliced Miller hot dogs takes over the monthly special spot for the start of baseball season.

Details: Open from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. Tuesday-Saturday and 12:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. Sunday at 3137 Stevens Creek Blvd., San Jose; https://tonyandalbaspizza.com.

AND FOR THE FREEBIE: Show up Thursday or Friday at Krispy Kreme wearing green, and you’ll receive a free Original Glazed doughnut. Find locations at www.krispykreme.com.
