By India Today Web Desk: The International Cricket Council (ICC), on Thursday, December 1, reprimanded Wanindu Hasaranga for showing dissent in Sri Lanka’s third and final ODI against Afghanistan on Wednesday at the Pallekele International Cricket Stadium.
Hasaranga was said to have breached Article 2.8 of the ICC’s Code of Conduct for Players and Player Support Personnel, which relates to “showing dissent at an Umpire’s decision during an International Match.”
Hasaranga received one demerit point, which happened to be his first in a period of 24 months. The leg-spinner was also handed a fine of 50 percent of his match fees.
Hasaranga pleaded guilty after Ranjan Madugalle, a member of the Emirates ICC Elite Panel of Match Referees, proposed the sanctions. A formal hearing wasn’t needed since Hasaranga admitted his fault.
On-field umpires Nitin Menon and Lyndon Hannibal, fourth umpire Ruchira Palliyaguruge and third umpire Raveendra Wimalasari leveled the charges.
During the game on November 30, Hasaranga was unhappy after Najibullah Zadran’s LBW decision was overturned. The on-field umpire gave Najibullah out, but after the left-hander used the DRS, the decision had to be reversed.
Not happy with the decision by any stretch of the imagination, the 25-year-old Hasaranga pointed at the giant screen.
Zadran went on to score 77 runs off 76 balls with the help of eight fours and one six before Hasaranga accounted for his wicket.
However, his knock went in vain as Sri Lanka chased down 314 following Charith Asalanka’s unbeaten 83-run knock. Dunith Wellalage’s 31-run knock also helped the Islanders in the run-chase at Pallekele.
