Security breached; Ensure tighter protection for yatris: Congress to Shah

The Congress leadership on Wednesday took up with Union home minister Amit Shah the issue of alleged security lapses during the Rahul Gandhi-led Bharat Jodo Yatra in Delhi, and sought tightened security for him and other leaders when they resume the yatra next week towards Srinagar via Punjab and some other states.

In a letter to Shah, AICC general secretary (org) KC Venugopal said: “The security of Bharat Jodo Yatra was compromised on multiple occasions and the Delhi Police completely failed in controlling the surging crowds… The situation was so severe that Congress workers and Bharat Yatris walking with Rahul Gandhi had to form a security perimeter.”

He claimed that the Intelligence Bureau had interrogated many people who participated in the yatra, and referred to an FIR filed at Sona in Haryana over unknown “miscreants” entering the yatra camp site.

“Bharat Jodo Yatra is a padyatra to bring peace and harmony to the country. The government should not indulge in vindictive politics and ensure the safety and security of the Congress leaders,” Venugopal said, while also referring to the assassination of former PMs Indira Gandhi and Rajiv Gandhi.

He demanded better security for the yatra when it resumes on January 3 before entering the sensitive state of Punjab and J&K. “In this regard, I request you to take immediate steps to ensure the safety and security of Rahul Gandhi, a Z+ protectee, and of all the Bharat Yatris and leaders joining Bharat Jodo Yatra,” Venugopal wrote to Shah.

Fundamentals of India are under constant attack: Kharge

Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge alleged that under the BJP government, the basic principles that formed the fundamentals and the idea of India were under attack with hatred being spread all over.
“The fundamentals of India are under constant attack. Society is being divided by spreading hate. People are in difficulty due to inflation and unemployment. But the government does not care,” Kharge said on Wednesday. He was addressing a gathering at the Congress headquarters after unfurling the party flag on the occasion of the 138th foundation day of the party.

He said the Congress party’s inclusive approach had ensured the progress of India’s democracy and growth, making it among the frontline nations in various sectors.
