San Jose police: Willow Glen High School student arrested with loaded “ghost gun,” no ongoing threat

SAN JOSE — A Willow Glen High School student was arrested Wednesday with a loaded “ghost gun” in his possession on the school’s campus, according to San Jose police.

Police were alerted of the incident at 11:57 a.m. and said in a tweet around 12:30 p.m. that two school resource officers had arrested the student after a brief pursuit. There was no ongoing threat to the school community or the public at large, authorities said.

“Thanks to the quick actions of these on-campus School Resource Officers, this gun was seized and possibly prevented a tragic event from occurring,” the San Jose Police Department said on Twitter.

A San Jose police spokesperson confirmed to Bay Area News Group that there were no shots fired or injuries reported. Officers also confiscated a knife from the student.

When asked if the school resource officers were armed and drew weapons as the situation unfolded, the spokesperson said that information was still under investigation.

In an email sent out to parents at 12:49 p.m., the San Jose Unified School District confirmed that both Willow Glen High and Middle schools were placed under lockdown and shelter in-place orders respectively, and both were lifted as of the time the email was sent.

“All students and staff are safe and secure,” the district said, adding that counselors were available for students at both schools. “We are extremely grateful for the fast and courageous response of the Willow Glen High staff and campus police officer.”

The department said officers would remain in the area while they investigated the situation.
