Johnny Doughnuts, a popular Bay Area doughnut business, is set to open a brand new outpost this Saturday in San Francisco’s Pacific Heights neighborhood, according to Hoodline. The original San Francisco location, at the corner of Gough and Fulton, closed in June. This new location will be the only outpost in the city.
Originally started in 2012 as a food truck by founder Craig Blum, the company proudly makes its doughnuts in a sort-of retro style — “our recipes started with classic doughs from the 1920’s that we play with based on seasonality and the freshest local ingredients we can find,” the website says.
The company still offers doughnuts out of a food truck as part of its “Johnny fleet,” which you can rent for a party or event, but there are brick-and-mortar locations in Santa Rosa, Larkspur, San Rafael, and now a new San Francisco spot at 2404 California St.
In August, Johnny Doughnuts was in the news for a different reason — a very bizarre break-in at its San Rafael location. A man broke into the space and took a few hundred dollars and some electronic devices. But the odd part came after Blum took a look at surveillance footage from the store’s cameras: The thief came back 10 minutes later, apparently to retrieve his keys.
“I thought the guy must have been like really high or something,” Blum told SFGATE in August. “… He popped back in again 10 minutes later and he does the same thing, rifling around and then grabs some keys and leaves. He might have had a truck that looked just like our truck or something, and grabbed the wrong set of keys.”
Regardless, Blum and his company have moved on and are planning to open in Pac Heights tomorrow. The first batch of doughnuts is set to be served bright and early at 7 a.m.
