Forecasters have warned that parts of eastern Australia could in for days of storms as inclement weather heads up the coast.
The stormy conditions and lower temperatures look set to replace the heat as the main weather feature over the coming days in parts of New South Wales and Victoria. That’s after Melbourne peaked at almost 36C on Wednesday.
Thursday morning could see severe thunderstorms across Sydney and showers after a humid and gusty night.
In Western Australia, a low intensity heatwave is building including in Perth. And a cyclone is brewing off the coast of Queensland.
“A prevailing southerly wind will be rolling up the NSW coast and it will lead to some persistent shower and storm activity,” said Sky News Weather meteorologist Alison Osborne.
“But temperatures will be noticeably colder across the entire southeast.
“It’s going to feel some five to eight degrees below average for this time of year. A huge swing after the extreme heat.”
Thursday in Sydney could see storms during the morning and into the early afternoon with rainfall possibly nearing 10mm. Temperatures should peak at 23C with an overnight low of 18C.
Some isolated showers could continue for the rest of the week and into the weekend with heavier falls on Sunday. Temperatures will remain similar to Thursday.
Further north and the storms will roll through later, in the afternoon and evening on Thursday for Coffs Harbour with up to 20mm of rain.
Those storms could then persist bringing up to 30mm of rain on Friday and around 35mm across the weekend.
A possible storm for Canberra on Thursday too but calmer conditions into the weekend with little in the way of rain. Expect temperatures in the capital of 20C on Thursday rising to 24C by Saturday and lows around 10C.
Melbourne 17 degrees cooler
After the scorching heat of Wednesday, Melbourne is going to be far cooler. On Thursday a high of just 19C is forecast, some 17 degrees less than the day before.
Friday will be sunny with a high of 24C and then 26C for both weekend days.
Storms are possible over the coming days particularly on Saturday and Sunday.
Settled conditions in Adelaide with a high of 24C on Thursday and then getting warmer over the coming days reaching 29C on Saturday and 33C on Sunday with mid teen minimums. South Australia should see little in the way of rain.
Cloudy in Hobart with temperatures bobbing around 20C and down to 12C or so at dawn over the coming days and into the weekend. The weekend could see some showers.
Heatwave for Perth
In Perth it’s getting toastier with a heatwave forecast by the Bureau of Meteorology across the south west from Thursday until at least Sunday.
Thursday could see temperatures of 33C in the WA capital, rising to 35C on Friday and 36C on Saturday. Lows in the region of 20C.
Storms are possible every day into and across the weekend which could bring some light rain with them.
Thunderstorms and rain in Darwin, which is no surprise for the Top End at this time of year. Up to 25mm could fall on Thursday and then 15mm on Friday but the rain gauge shouldn’t be as full on the weekend. Highs of 32-33C and overnight lows of 25C.
A pleasant few days in Brisbane with blue skies on Thursday and high of 30C. A possible light shower on Friday with a maximum of 27C followed by 28C on Saturday and similar for Sunday. At dawn for the next few days it should be around 20C.
The heavy rain should ease in the state’s far north but there might be a shower or two in Cairns.
“A tropical low is looking to form in the Coral Sea during the next couple of days,” said Ms Osborne.
“However, if it intensifies to a cyclone that’s expected to happen well away from the Australian coast.”
