Palette set to close after 4 years in San Francisco

San Francisco restaurant Palette is closing its doors after four years in the South of Market neighborhood, as first reported by Eater SF.

The news was shared Tuesday on Palette’s Instagram page, where the restaurant announced that its final day will be Feb. 15. The message included a line that read, “For fans and supporters, it will perhaps be no surprise that we will be closing our doors.”

“This will be the culmination of four years of incredible evolution, starting as a community-driven, pop-art café and retail concept to becoming the laser-focused fine-dining restaurant with a core interest on traceable seafood that it has become,” the Instagram post read in part.

Palette, which is located at 816 Folsom St. in San Francisco, is closing after four years.

Chef Peter Hemsley told Eater SF that the closure was partly due to the impacts of operating a business amid the pandemic. He added that while the pandemic offered new ways of working and perspective, it wasn’t enough to keep Palette afloat.

Palette opened in 2019 as an immersive dining destination that launched as a part fine dining restaurant, part gallery, and part ceramic studio. With an emphasis on creativity, customers were dazzled by imaginative plating and occasional art exhibits.

According to a 2019 report by The San Francisco Chronicle, Palette’s present home at 816 Folsom St. was meant to be temporary, while Hemsley and his team waited to move to 155 12th St. (The Chronicle and SFGATE are both owned by Hearst but have separate newsrooms.)

While Palette is expected to close, the goodbye message on Instagram hinted that Hemsley already has another project in the works.

“We are looking forward to the future, and we can’t wait to see you at the table again soon – more details to come.”
