‘Out of touch’: Influencer’s work fail lashed

An influencer who was labelled “privileged” for leaving her free Coachella trip early has responded to the backlash, stating she “can’t apologise”.

Kensington Tillo was invited to the star-studded music festival as a guest of Kourtney Kardashian’s lifestyle and wellness brand Poosh alongside a string of other high-profile influencers – and was being hosted entirely for free at “Camp Poosh”.

Guests were treated to a lavish trunk full of goodies which were flaunted by attendees on TikTok that included branded loungewear sets, expensive beauty products and custom jewellery.

But on day three, Tillo told her 1.6 million followers she was leaving early to get some much-needed rest, citing her physical and mental wellbeing.

Tillo’s decision was swiftly met with backlash, as many branded the move “wasteful” and suggested ditching her work obligations was something only the “privileged” could do.

Now the influencer, from Denver, Colorado, has clapped back – explaining why she “can’t genuinely apologise” for bailing on the event.

“I can totally see why I upset so many people, I guess, with my video about me leaving, but honestly, I can’t genuinely apologise if I did something that was good for myself,” she said in a video shared to TikTok.

“I’m honestly disappointed by everyone’s reaction who was being so vile and mean to me over something that was literally just for my own mental health and sanity,” she added.

Her follow-up video was met with praise by some who commended the social media star for prioritising her mental health.

“I actually respected and applauded you for prioritising your mental and physical health,” one fan commented.

“I literally told my bf I couldn’t understand how people were mad that you took care of yourself???” another agreed.

As one said: “You did the right thing. Mental health has to come first!!!”

However others stood by the claims the video came across as “privileged”, labelling her decision “totally out of touch”.

Tillo, who amassed her following sharing daily makeup videos and beauty vlogs, had originally explained she’d “made the executive decision” to leave a day early because she was struggling and wanted to “not push myself”.

“I’m really starting to listen to my body and not push myself when my body is telling me to sleep and go home. I need to listen,” she said.

Despite citing exhaustion, Tillo “got completely ready” in one of her Coachella outfits, stating she wanted to take photos before she left.

She also recounted an experience of being on another trip where she forced herself to “rage and party,” causing her to “completely spiral”.

Her admission sparked instant debate about influencer culture as well as privilege, as people argued she should have at least “donated” her unused ticket.

“Girl, so many people would want to be there. Just stand back and chill but go and enjoy the music,” one wrote.

“This is giving way too privileged,” another agreed.

As another declared: “This is so wasteful.”
