Oakland brewery undergoes makeover into festive ‘ski village’

Not everyone can get to Tahoe to enjoy the lovely snow Mother Nature has been dumping recently. But there’s a simulacrum closer to home at Oakland’s Temescal Brewing, which this holiday season has transformed into a decked-out lodge with ski equipment, a virtual hearth and hot-beer toddies.

“Our goal is to bring the Tahoe aprés-ski vibes to the city,” says brewery cofounder Dvorit Mausner, noting that the makeover took several weeks to accomplish. Upon walking in, visitors encounter a “ski check” to stow any gear and then pass into a quaint interior decked with ski memorabilia and gift-wrapped presents. There’s a “mistletoe nook” with 2,400 gift bows, meant for the Instagram crowd, and a heated outdoor tent done up with hundreds of floating snowballs.

The brewery schlepped in a wooden mantle from an estate sale to give the impression of a roaring hearth. “Can’t say that the fire inside of it is real (nor the fire showing on the retro TV), but we’ve winterized our space so completely that it’s even warmer than a real fire would get us,” Mausner says. “Super cozy in there now.”

Temescal is calling the pop-up the “No Jerks Ski Village.”

“Our company’s slogan since opening has always been ‘Fresh beer, no jerks,” he says. “It’s printed on our cans, and we’ve always had a neon sign in our nook that reads ‘no jerks,’ now surrounded by bows…. All in all, it’s the vibe of our business that we’re all about good times with pals and… no jerks.”

For more information about what the ski village is serving up – from winter spiced ale to black lager to beer toddies and flaming hot cocoa – check out the brewery’s Instagram.

Details: Open until 10 p.m. Tuesday-Saturday and until 9 p.m. Sunday-Monday at 4115 Telegraph Ave. in Oakland; temescalbrewing.com.
