‘More is not more’: A perfume guru’s secret to style

Who are your favourite designers? I love Phoebe Philo. It’s a newsworthy name to drop but there were so many gorgeous pieces in her new collection. I’ve always loved Vivienne Westwood for her edge and the way she used fashion as a soapbox for important causes. Her quote, “Buy less, choose well, make it last”, is an important take-away for us all.

This Celine “Mini 16” handbag is the latest item to occupy part of Belinda Smith’s wardrobe.

What’s your fragrance of choice? Our newest fragrance to the St. Rose collection, “French Poetry”, is on high rotation. I’m not usually a floral gourmand girl, but I’m obsessed: it’s so beautiful. It’s more feminine than I would usually wear; even in beauty I steal from the boys. I usually wear a more masculine scent, such as “Terre Rouge”. I do occasionally wear fragrances other than St. Rose. Scent is so steeped in memory; I wore Le Labo “Ylang 49” on my wedding day, so it’s fun to wear that on our anniversary.

What are the three essential items in your wardrobe? Khaite “The Danielle” jeans, classic white tees and a black blazer.

Any go-to jewellery? A vintage Rolex from 1986 – the year of my birth – that my husband gave to me on my 30th. It had never been worn, so that’s pretty special. I always have a big ring stack, including some beautiful pieces from my grandparents, and dainty Gigi Clozeau bracelets.

Can you remember a favourite outfit you wore as a child? I remember my first perfume. When I was 11, we had a French exchange student stay with us; she was older than me and I thought everything she did was the coolest. She wore Calvin Klein “CK One” and I begged my parents to let me have a bottle.

And your worst fashion mistake? Caring too much about labels and wearing too much make-up in my late teens. More is not more.

What was your first fashion moment? As a graduation gift, my parents took me to Paris. Discovering all the gorgeous shops, designers and vintage markets made me fall in love with fashion.

What’s at the top of your wishlist? A classic Omega “Seamaster” watch.

Is there something you would never wear? The Maison Margiela “Tabi” shoe; it looks like a camel.

What’s a current trend you like? I’m into quiet luxury, people looking for beautiful, quality materials from undiscovered designers rather than chasing logos and labels. In fragrance, I love how we’re getting away from having a signature and looking to “wardrobe” with scent, having several to play with within a week or even within a day.

What shoes do you wear most often? Onitsuka Tiger “Mexico 66” sneakers in different colours. I’m always wearing black and white, so that’s my fun pop of colour. I also love my Khaite “Dallas” boots; they’re dressy and playful with a western moment.

What do you sleep in? Desmond & Dempsey pyjamas.

Who is your favourite fashion icon? It’s forever Kate Moss. I love Sienna Miller and Victoria Beckham, too, but Kate is the epitome of effortless.

What do you wear on a typical working day? The Frankie Shop high-waisted, wide-leg trousers with a blouse and a blazer.

What’s your favourite off-duty, casual Sunday look? I wish I had a chic answer for this, but I’ll still be in my yoga gear running around after the kids.
