Microsoft’s Innovative Approach to Naming Cybercriminal Threats – Market Research Telecast

Microsoft Names Cyber Attacks After Natural Disasters

For years, a cyber attack has been just that: an incursion by a person into the systems of a large company or entity with a malicious purpose. These can be of many types and once solved, it is necessary to carry out a large investigation in order to know the origin of the attacker.

And to this end Microsoft has added a new attack classification system named after natural disasters. Blizzards and tsunami among other names Lovers of the world of video games are used to having hardware with aggressive and epic names in their hands.

One of the most recurring families is that of natural disasters, which always allude to the force of nature due to its magnitude and greatness of drastically changing the environment. And this has not gone unnoticed by Microsoft, which has also decided to name the different cyber attacks received after a catastrophe.

The software company has made a division according to the origin of the attack, the motivation, if it attacks which sector or the influence of the attacked groups. Further investigation will give you a full name, but this is a temporary one.

At the moment, there are several names that directly define the origin of the attack, something key in any investigation. Among them we find the following division:

  • China – Typhoon
  • North Korea – Sleet
  • South Korea – Hail
  • Iran – Sandstorm
  • Lebanon – Rain
  • Russia – Blizzard
  • Turkey – Dust
  • Vietnam – Cyclone

And this is only a small division since there are other details such as: Financial Motivation – Storm, Private Sector Action – Tsunami, Storm – Development Groups, and Flood – Influential Ops.

According to Microsoft Threat Intelligence Officer John Lambert, “We have reassigned all existing threat actors to the new taxonomy and, in the future, we will use the new threat actor names.” The firm has already begun to give names and among them they have been classified with a color or one of the aforementioned categories.

For example, there is Secret Blizzard, which is a type of attack that comes from Russia, Denim Tsunami, which is one that affects the private sector, or Granite Typhoon, which comes directly from China, among others that you can consult in the post published by the company.
