Booming Chinese brand MG has recalled more than 5000 vehicles to address a fire risk in two of its hi-tech SUV models.
The brand says 5168 examples of its plug-in hybrid MG HS PHEV and MG HS+ EV SUVs are affected by the recall.
A recall notice posted on the brand’s website says improperly placed carpet could lead to a fire hazard.
“Due to a manufacturing defect, the carpet underlay may be positioned between the nut and the electrical ground stud. If the nut detaches over time due to vibrations whilst driving, it could cause the wiring beneath the floor to overheat and it may result in a fire inside the vehicle.
The notice says: “A vehicle fire could increase the risk of injury or death to vehicle occupants, other road users or bystanders.”
An MG Motor Australia spokesman said the cars in question were sold between February 1, 2021 and March 21, 2023.
“Safety is of the utmost importance to MG and as such, we have already commenced contacting owners of affected vehicles and all other relevant parties to organise inspection and repair, at no cost to the customer, if required,” the spokesman said.
MG will get in touch with customers affected by the issue.
The electric MG ZS EV model is not affected by this month’s recall.
MG has rocketed from obscurity to become one of the most popular brands in Australia, outselling established manufacturers such as Nissan, Subaru and Honda this year.
