Liz Truss ‘enjoying a well-deserved break’ after stint as PM

Liz Truss is “enjoying a well-deserved break” after her stint as prime minister, a close ally has said.

Therese Coffey, who served as deputy prime minister under her premiership, said Truss is currently spending time with family.

Truss became the UK’s shortest-serving premier after departing just 49 days into the job.

Rishi Sunak appointed Coffey as environment secretary as she made a return to Cabinet in the reshuffle.

Dominic Raab was appointed as deputy prime minister by Sunak, as well as justice secretary.

Speaking on Sky News on Friday, Coffey said she is looking forward to Truss returning to Parliament.

“I have of course been in touch with Liz. She’s a good friend,” said Coffey.

“She’s with her family. I think she’s enjoying a well-deserved break.”

She continued: “I look forward to Liz returning and as she said, she’d be serving the people of her constituency, south west Norfolk, from the backbenches.

“I believe that she will continue to be a strong advocate of key Conservative principles.

“I look forward to seeing her again when she’s come back from her short break with her family.”

During her farewell speech on Tuesday, Truss made no apology for the turmoil in the wake of the mini-budget set out by the former chancellor Kwasi Kwarteng.

Instead, she argued that reducing taxes remains the key to economic growth, while quoting Roman philosopher Seneca.
