For a man with the longevity that most in his profession would envy, Al Michaels has gotten this far without the help from one section of the food pyramid.

Michaels claims that he has never knowingly eaten a vegetable.

The 78-year-old broadcaster confirmed as much in an interview with CNN’s Chris Wallace last week.

“I guess what I’ve proven, Chris, is that man does not need vegetables to survive,” Michaels said.

Wallace then asked Michaels if he would be willing to try one of the more “non-objectionable” vegetables — carrots — which the legendary sports broadcaster balked at.

“Oh, please,” Michaels replied. “No, that’s an objectionable vegetable. I look at it. I just don’t even like the look of it, and I surmise what it might taste like just in terms of the texture of it. It just doesn’t look like something that would go down well.”

Michaels is best known for his many years of calling play-by-play for NFL games, including nearly three decades on Monday Night Football. He has also covered other major sporting events, including MLB games and the Olympics.

One of his most famous broadcasting moments came during the 1980 Winter Olympics, where he made the memorable call of the “Miracle on Ice” hockey game between the United States and the Soviet Union, proclaiming in the final seconds of the upset: “Do you believe in miracles? Yes!”

But, as for now, the only miracle it seems would be if Michaels orders a garden salad with his steak.
