Aussies have expressed their surprise at a wild detail at KFC’s Penrith restaurant.
The store, in Sydney’s west, has a “food elevator” in its drive-through – meaning takeaway orders are delivered to customers in their cars via conveyor belt.
While staff will “still hand you food”, according to one TikTokvideo of the futuristic feature, diners can also opt for “staff [to] put the food in the elevator”.
The clip shocked social media users – though not everyone was convinced at the elevator’s efficiency.
“It’s just further to walk when [your order is] wrong,” one wrote.
To which the user who posted the video responded: “Yes … When we got our food we triple checked our order to make sure we had it all.”
“What happens if it gets stuck?” another wondered.
While someone else joked that they “would park way too far from it to reach my food”.
Others compared the innovation to the famous McDonald’s “kitchen in the sky” at Sydney Airport’s T1 International – where burgers and fries are also delivered to customers via a conveyor belt.
The restaurant has gone viral on TikTok in the past, with users marvelling at the feature, some calling it the “coolest McDonald’s I’ve ever seen”.
“McDonald’s at Sydney Airport with dual storey – second level is the food preparation and first level is for collection,” one diner explained.
At the time of the restaurant’s launch, senior development director at McDonald’s Australia, Josh Bannister, said working within the limited space, they needed to be creative in how they designed the restaurant.
The technologically advanced Macca’s features a see-through kitchen raised high above terminal one, with design firm Landini Associates briefed with creating an “iconic, memorable customer experience, like nothing seen before”.
Given the amount of TikToks from shocked customers, it’s safe to say they achieved that goal.
“What is this McDonald’s magic?” one TikTok user joked.
Mr Bannister explained placing the kitchen above the counter, while visually stimulating, was structurally complex, because they had to ensure it could deliver its wares efficiently and quickly to the customers below.
“We combined kiosk-ordering technology and a ‘transporter’ delivery system. Although we’re always open to exploring different opportunities, our focus remains on freestanding restaurants with a drive-through.”
