Karl’s crack at ‘un-Australian’ pub prices

Today host Karl Stefanovic has blasted one city for its outrageously overpriced classic Aussie dinner.

On Tuesday morning, Stefanovic said Sydney had “lost the plot” after he was confronted with one restaurant’s hefty fee of $46.70 for a chicken schnitzel.

The schnitty itself, which will set you back more than breadcrumbs, is priced at $28.90 at the Five Dock Bowling Club, with chips and salad setting customers back even further.

Added fries are priced at $6.90, and a side salad will set customers back another $8.90.

“This is outrageous, this is un-Australian,” Stefanovic’s co-host Sarah Abo said.

The venue opened last Wednesday and is already making headlines for the pricey classics.

Sydney reporter Lucy McLeod said she bought the ingredients at Coles for $56 and, while holding a bag of frozen chips, asked Stefanovic if he’d pay the hefty price for the humble schnitty.

“Karl, I trust myself enough to make it, but I’m wondering would your family trust you? Or are you just going to be serving up salmonella?” McLeod asked.

“Whack it in their airfryer and Bob’s your uncle,” he said.

“And that’ll cost you, like, nine bucks.

“That is ridiculous – that is why Sydney has lost the plot.”

Five Dock Bowling Club has been contacted for comment.

Aussie chicken producer Ingham’s announced recently it would soon be passing on increasing costs of chicken feed, packaging and production to customers.

The company said the price of chicken feed alone had increased by 29.6 per cent and freight costs had ballooned by an extra $28.2m.
